Intercom vs Zendesk (2026): What Changed When Salesforce Bought One of Them

Intercom is now Fin and owned by Salesforce; Zendesk bought Forethought. Seat prices, AI billing units and what counts as a billable resolution side by side, a worked bill at 1,000, 10,000 and 50,000 contacts, and when neither is the answer.

Intercom vs Zendesk (2026): What Changed When Salesforce Bought One of Them

Compiled by Rob Jiang. Published October 8, 2026 · Last updated October 8, 2026.

Intercom vs Zendesk used to be a helpdesk question. In 2026 it became an AI-billing question: Intercom renamed itself Fin and was bought by Salesforce, Zendesk bought Forethought, and both now charge per AI resolution on top of per-seat plans.

TL;DR: On listed prices, Intercom with Fin costs less than Zendesk at every volume we modelled ($5,800 vs $8,500 a month at 10,000 contacts), but both meter AI separately from seats, so pick the helpdesk for your human team and price the AI on its own.

Methodology & sources

  • Seat and AI prices read from Intercom's pricing page, Fin's pricing page, Zendesk's pricing page and Aissist's pricing page on 8 October 2026, in USD.
  • Billing definitions from Fin's pricing page and Zendesk's automated resolution tiers article.
  • Ownership facts from Salesforce, Zendesk and Permira press releases, linked where used.
  • Worked bill assumptions: AI resolves 50% of contacts; one human agent per 500 human-handled contacts (minimum two).
  • Disclosure: this is Aissist's blog. Aissist sells an AI layer that runs on top of Intercom, Zendesk and other helpdesks, and it appears as a third option below.

What changed for Intercom and Zendesk in 2026?

Intercom became Fin and now belongs to Salesforce, while Zendesk, still private-equity owned, bought Forethought and sells it as a paid add-on. Every page ranking for this comparison was written before either change.

The Intercom side moved fast. The company adopted the Fin name around May 2026, MarTech reported. Salesforce agreed to buy Fin for about $3.6 billion on 15 June 2026 and completed the deal on 10 September 2026, folding Fin and its 30,000+ customers into Salesforce's AI Labs.

"The #1 customer agent meets the #1 CRM." — Marc Benioff, Chair and CEO, Salesforce

Zendesk's change came from the other direction. A Hellman & Friedman and Permira consortium took Zendesk private for about $10.2 billion in November 2022. In March 2026, Constellation Research reported that Zendesk was acquiring Forethought, and on 4 June 2026 Zendesk began selling Forethought AI agents as an add-on, with pricing through sales. Our Zendesk AI alternatives after Forethought covers what that means at renewal.

"Forethought was founded on the belief that AI will transform customer experience for every business." — Sami Ghoche, CEO, Forethought, via Constellation Research

The practical effect is the same on both sides: the AI agent is now the product being sold, and the helpdesk is the place it lives. One of them is now a Salesforce product; the other is a helpdesk that bought its AI. Neither is standing still waiting for your renewal.

Intercom vs Zendesk: how do they compare side by side?

Intercom's seats are cheaper and Fin's per-resolution price is lower, while Zendesk includes a small resolution allowance per seat and charges more for each resolution beyond it. The third column is the option neither vendor's page discusses: keep the helpdesk you run and add an AI layer on top.

Both resolution figures are vendor-claimed, and neither publishes a method. The billing rows matter more. Fin bills some non-resolutions, such as a routing to self-serve; Zendesk's verified tier, live since 18 May 2026, bills only what passes its LLM check. See our Zendesk AI pricing explainer for the tier mechanics.

What does each cost at 1,000, 10,000 and 50,000 contacts?

At list price, Intercom with Fin costs about 30% less than Zendesk Professional at every volume, and Zendesk plus an AI layer costs $10,750–$20,750 at 50,000 contacts against $29,000 for Intercom with Fin. All rows hold the AI resolution rate at 50% and use the same human seat count.

Zendesk Professional + Aissist ($115 seat, $0.20–$0.60 resolution)$230 (free AI tier)$2,150–$4,150$10,750–$20,750

The Zendesk row nets out its included allowance (10 resolutions per agent) before charging $1.50 each; on pay-as-you-go at $2.00, the 10,000-contact bill rises to $10,950. Fin on Zendesk adds no Fin seat cost, which is why it lands close to the all-Intercom bill. The Aissist range depends on channel: Aissist's pricing page estimates $0.25 per email resolution and $0.60 per chat resolution. Run your own mix through our price comparison tool.

Why 50%? It is a deliberately conservative figure from a named Fin customer, below both vendors' headline claims.

"The numbers speak for themselves. We're seeing a 50% resolution rate with Fin, which is pretty amazing!" — Ben Peak, Director, Technical Support, Robin, on Intercom's pricing page

What the table leaves out is mostly upside risk: Forethought's add-on price is unpublished, and Zendesk Enterprise is quote-only.

Should you pick Intercom/Fin or Zendesk?

Pick on the helpdesk your human team needs, because the AI line can now be bought separately from either. Here are the verdicts.

Pick Intercom/Fin if:

  • You are choosing a helpdesk from scratch and want the lowest listed seat and AI price in this comparison.
  • Your support runs mostly through in-app chat, with the Messenger included from the $29 Essential plan.
  • You already run Salesforce and want your AI agent and CRM under one owner after September 2026.

Skip it if you are wary of a roadmap now set inside Salesforce, or you need email and phone ticketing more than in-app chat.

Pick Zendesk if:

  • You need email, voice and social ticketing at volume, with telephony included from Suite Team.
  • You want AI billed only on verified resolutions, with an LLM check deciding what you pay for.
  • You prefer a helpdesk vendor that is not owned by your CRM vendor, and you can negotiate committed resolution pricing.

Skip it if budget decides: Zendesk is the most expensive row in our worked bill at every volume, and Forethought's add-on price is unpublished.

"This is a major win for consumers of the world." — Eoghan McCabe, CEO and Co-Founder, Fin, on the Salesforce deal

Acquisition announcements always sound like this. Your renewal terms are where you find out what it means for you.

When is neither the answer?

If you already run a working helpdesk, migrating to get a different AI agent is the most expensive way to buy one. Both Fin and Forethought are now sold to customers of other helpdesks, which tells you the AI and the helpdesk have come apart.

An AI layer keeps your seats, tickets and workflows where they are and adds resolution on top. Aissist is one such layer. Its pricing page lists $0.09 per interaction, capped at $0.20 to $0.60 per resolution, a free tier to 1,000 tickets a month, and no minimums. It integrates with both Intercom and Zendesk; our guide on adding AI to Zendesk without replacing your stack covers the rollout.

The cons are real. Aissist publishes no audited resolution rate, it is a smaller independent vendor, and adding a layer means one more vendor in your security review. If you are on Fin and weighing renewal after the acquisition, our Fin alternatives guide has a renewal-timing decision tree.

Pick the helpdesk for your people and price the AI on its own

Intercom with Fin is the cheaper listed option and the natural choice inside Salesforce. Zendesk is the broader ticketing platform with the stricter definition of a billable resolution. But the bigger change in 2026 is that both now sell their AI agents beyond their own helpdesks. Choose the helpdesk your human agents need. Then compare AI resolution prices separately, including layers that run on the helpdesk you already have.

Frequently asked questions

Is Intercom cheaper than Zendesk in 2026?

Yes, at list price. Intercom Advanced is $85 per seat against $115 for Zendesk Suite Professional, and Fin charges $0.99 per outcome against Zendesk's $1.50 to $2.00 per automated resolution beyond the included allowance (pricing pages, October 2026).

What is Fin by Intercom now?

Fin is the new name of Intercom, the company, and of its AI agent. Salesforce completed its roughly $3.6 billion acquisition of Fin on 10 September 2026, and Fin now operates within Salesforce's AI Labs.

Does Fin work with Zendesk?

Fin's pricing page lists Fin for Zendesk among its integrations, with no seat fee and a 50-outcome monthly minimum on non-Intercom helpdesks. Its FAQ list of supported helpdesks omits Zendesk, so confirm with Fin before you buy.

What counts as an automated resolution in Zendesk?

Since 18 May 2026, only a verified resolution draws down your allowance: the AI handled the conversation, the customer did not ask for more help, and an LLM check confirmed the request was resolved.

Is Forethought included in Zendesk plans?

No. Zendesk sells Forethought AI agents as a separate add-on, available since 4 June 2026, with pricing through Zendesk sales rather than published.

Is Freshdesk a cheaper alternative to Intercom and Zendesk?

On seats, yes: Freshdesk lists Growth at $19 and Pro at $55 per agent per month billed annually, and Freddy AI Agent sells sessions at $49 per 100 beyond 500 included (Freshdesk pricing, October 2026). Our Freshdesk pricing breakdown runs the same worked bill.
